Bomectin Antiparasitic Injection for Cattle and Pigs BOMECTIN-INJECTION Elanco

Description

Bomectin Antiparasitic Injection for cattle and pigs delivers 10 mg/mL ivermectin in a ready-to-use sterile solution. Elanco Australasia Pty Ltd formulates this broad-spectrum injectable for beef cattle, non-lactating dairy cattle and pigs. Ivermectin belongs to the macrocyclic lactone class of endectocides. As a result, it controls many internal and external parasites in a single subcutaneous dose.

This product treats ivermectin-sensitive parasites across two species. In cattle, it controls gastrointestinal roundworms, lungworms and eyeworms. It also controls sucking lice, mites and cattle tick. In pigs, it controls gastrointestinal roundworms, kidney worms and lungworms. Furthermore, it controls lice and mange mites. Therefore, producers gain wide parasite cover from one handling event.

How Bomectin Antiparasitic Injection works

Ivermectin binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in parasite nerve and muscle cells. This action paralyses and kills the parasite. Mammals do not carry these channels, so the product holds a wide safety margin. At the label dose, Bomectin also gives some sustained control. For example, it controls Ostertagia and Cooperia acquired up to 7 days after treatment. In addition, it controls lungworm and screw-worm fly larvae acquired up to 14 days after treatment.

Dosing and administration

Producers give Bomectin by subcutaneous injection in the neck. Cattle receive 1 mL per 50 kg liveweight. Pigs receive 1 mL per 33 kg liveweight. Always inject under the skin only. Do not use the intravenous or intramuscular route. In addition, dose the group to the heaviest animal and never underdose.

Bomectin Injection is only registered for and recommended to be administered by subcutaneous injection.  The product is formulated to administer the correct amount of Ivermectin to the host animal via this application method only.  If administered orally then it will be passed by the animal and the amount of Ivermectin required to treat parasites may not be realised.
